Hello TTK Families!
This week we are bringing you another installment of our blog series – staff favourite activities!
Next up is… Kathleen!
Kathleen has been working with Tomorrows Topkids for exactly one year today, happy TTK-anniversary Kathleen! She first joined us as the Administrative Clerk in the main office, and has since taken on many different roles including working this past summer at our Spul’u’kwuks Clubhouse and joining the MacCorkindale staff team in the mornings!
While she didn’t start working at TTK to work directly with our participants, she takes every chance she can to spend time with the kids! One of her favourite activities is a classic – Uno!
There are so many different kinds of Uno out there – I found over 30 versions in a quick online search! Everything from Minecraft Uno, to Frozen Uno, to Uno Jackpot… but nothing compares to the classic game – but did you know the entire game is just a fancy version of the classic card game Crazy 8s?
How to play Uno or Crazy 8s:
Each player gets 7 cards. The remaining cards are left in the draw pile and once card is face-up on the table.
The youngest player goes first and then the player to their left follows in a circle.
You can play the following cards:
-
- Any card with the same number (ex. if a 7 is face-up, you may play any 7s in your hand)
- Any card with the same colour (if playing with a regular deck, you would play the same suit)
- Any card that is wild (in Uno, this is any card with all 4 colours present. In Crazy 8s, this is any card with the number 8)
These cards have additional rules:
-
- In Uno, a +2 or +4 card means you need to pick up that many cards.
- In Crazy 8s, a 2 card means pick up 2 and a Queen of Spades means pick up 5.
- Both games have a “skip a turn” card. In Crazy 8s, this is a Jack of any suit.
- In Uno, there is a “Switch direction” card which reverses the turns in the circle.
If you can’t play a card, pick up one and skip your turn if you still can’t play.
If you have only one card left you must say “Uno!” before anyone else notices. In Crazy 8s you must say “last card!” If you forget and someone catches you, you must pick up two cards.
The first player to use up all their cards is the winner!
